Great Summer & Autumn Destinations in Finnish Lapland

The northernmost region of Finland, Lapland is the most exotic of Finnish destinations, known for its incredible light phenomena like the Northern Lights and Midnight Sun, the beauty of its vast arctic wildernesses, and of course its most famous resident, Santa Claus.

Finnish Lapland provides a wide range of exciting activities and adventures in nature. For hikers and mountain-bikers, Lapland is home to Finland’s three largest national parks, all with well marked routes and plenty of lean-tos and wilderness huts to avail of on longer hikes. Lapland is also home to some of the best salmon fishing rivers in Europe, the River Teno is the best salmon river in Europe, while the Tornio-Muonio is the longest free-flowing river in Europe, stretching for 230 km, and also one of the best. With so many great rivers and countless lakes, Lapland is also easily explored by kayak, canoe, or even SUP board, while the more adventurous can try whitewater rafting.

As summer ends and the Midnight Sun fades, the skies come alive again with spectacular Aurora Borealis shows, with the season beginning in late August and lasting through to the end of April. In some regions, like Kilpisjärvi and Utsjoki, the Northern Lights can be seen as many as 5 out of 7 nights, depending on cloud cover. Summer’s end also sees a breathtaking change to Lapland’s nature, as the fells, fens, and forests don their autumn clothing of striking golds, reds, and orange – Lapland at its most beautiful and colourful, before the winter mantle of snow covers the land. Autumn in Finland, called ruska, is also a time for foragers, with an abundance of berries and mushrooms waiting to be picked. More unusual activities visitors can try include panning for gold or even digging for amethysts. And all the while breathing air that has been measured as the cleanest in Europe!
