Laila Pullinen Home Museum & Sculpture Park – Art in Dialogue with Nature

Open 4 June – 30 August 2026 (Thu–Sun, 11:00–17:00)

Located in the historic surroundings of Nissbacka Manor in Vantaa, the Laila Pullinen Home Museum & Sculpture Park offers a unique combination of art, nature and cultural history. Created over decades, the site brings together sculpture, landscape and lived history in a way that feels both personal and timeless.

Laila Pullinen – The Artist Behind the Place

Laila Pullinen (1933–2015) was one of Finland’s most recognised sculptors, known for her strong material-based approach and expressive formal language. Her work combines classical sculpture techniques with an Informalist sense of form, often exploring the relationship between material and immaterial.

After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki, she continued her studies in Rome and worked internationally before returning to Finland. Over the decades, she created a wide range of public works across the country, while also developing her own artistic environment at Nissbacka.

Her vision extended beyond individual sculptures. At Nissbacka, she created a total work of art where landscape, architecture and sculpture form a continuous dialogue. This environment remains at the core of the museum today.

Home Museum – An Intimate Experience

Opened permanently in 2021, the Home Museum offers a rare insight into Pullinen’s personal life. The house has been preserved as it was, with personal objects, artworks and furnishings left in place.

Visitors are encouraged to experience the space directly – without display cases or barriers – creating a sense of closeness that is unusual for a museum setting. You can sit in the living room, spend time on the terrace, and observe the details that shaped her daily life.

The home also reflects her wide artistic network, with works by Finnish and international artists, including Salvador Dalí. It highlights Pullinen not only as an artist, but also as a collaborator, connector and active figure in the cultural world.

Sculpture Park – A Living Landscape

The sculpture park forms the heart of the museum and reflects Pullinen’s vision of a total work of art. Her sculptures are placed in dialogue with the historic manor landscape, its old trees and natural surroundings.

As you move through the park, the experience changes with light, weather and season. Bronze and stone surfaces reflect their environment, while the calm atmosphere invites visitors to slow down and observe.

The park is maintained with respect for natural processes. Old trees, traditional structures and the surrounding landscape are preserved, making the environment itself an essential part of the experience.

The Granary – The Main Exhibition Space

The natural-stone Granary, built in 1924, has served as the museum’s main exhibition space since 1985. It presents a broad overview of Pullinen’s work from the 1950s to the 2000s, including key sculptures, portraits and scale models of public works.
The building retains its original character, creating a calm and atmospheric setting for the collection.

Atelier Gallery – From Studio to Exhibition Space

The Atelier Gallery was originally Pullinen’s working studio, located in a restored section of a former cowshed. Today, it hosts rotating exhibitions and still shows traces of her creative process, from tools to working surfaces.

Café Anja & Annikki

During the summer season, Café Anja & Annikki offers a relaxed stop within the museum grounds. The café focuses on local ingredients, sustainability and low waste, and can be visited without a museum ticket.
