Röytty House Museum

The Röytty House Museum is situated next to the church in the village of Taipalsaari. The house was first mentioned in 1680 as an official military residence: for a short period of time, Röytty served as an official residence for the lieutenants of the Swedish Army. However, under the terms of the Treaty of Turku in 1743, the entire region of Taipalsaari passed into the hands of Russia after which Röytty House became an inn. Throughout the 19th century and up to 1937, the house served as a place of rest and refreshment for travellers; the last innkeeper was one Viktor Rikkonen. His heir, Veikko Rikkonen, handed the house over to the municipality of Taipalsaari in 1988. Finally in 1996, Röytty House was opened as a museum.
