St. Nikolaos Orthodox Church

The oldest building in the city of Kotka, St. Nikolaos Orthodox Church was built between 1799 and 1801 in the neoclassical Palladian style. The church was built to a design by Jakov Perrin who was the architect of the St. Petersburg Admiralty.
There are a number of beautiful icons in the church, including one that depicts St. Nicholas in Kotka, with a view of the naval battle of Ruotsinsalmi behind him. There is also a statue of Maria Purpur outside the church, she is reputed to have saved it from destruction during the Crimean War.
