Kieppi, Kokkola Museum of Natural History

The Nature Collection became a part of the sights of Kokkola in January 1982. In the summer of 2000 it was moved to a new building. The specimen in the collection have been collected and prepared by one person, Veikko Salkio. No animal has been killed for the collection, they have died due to road traffic or other accidental means. They have been brought by the authorities, helpers and also the public.

Placed on natural bases, the birds number at 230 species and 502 individual specimens. Species that occur rarely in Finland are represented among others by  the northern fulmar, pomarine skua, black tern, laughing dove, barn owl and the great spotted cuckoo that has been spotted only once in Finland in Kokkola in the autmn of 1945.

The most endangered of the species featured are the white-tailed eagle, shore lark, smew, lesser white-fronted goose, common quail, corn crake and great snipe.

As of the year 2000, the number of mammals featured were 52 species and 123 individual specimens. Represented are, among others, all Finnish insectivores, mustelidae and rodents.
