The Geological Museum of Oulu University

The Geological Museum of the University of Oulu was founded in 1969 with the aim of collecting, conserving and maintaining geological samples for university and general educational purposes and for research. The collections are mainly from Fennoscandia but the mineral and rock collections in particular are of worldwide origin.

At the Geological Museum you can discover why volcanoes spew lava. The museum has over 12,000 samples, some 2,700 of which are on display. Various types of rocks and minerals as well as stones for jewellery and rocks used in building construction are represented. The speciality of the museum, which is located in the University of Oulu, consists of sediment samples.
