Museum Gallery Alariesto

The museum gallery Alariesto is located in the centre of Sodankylä, in the immediate vicinity of the old church and reindeer statue. The gallery was opened in July 1986 and features a permanent exhibition of Andreas Alariesto’s (1900-1989) lifelong artistic work. The art collection consists of 100 paintings, the miniature sculpture ‘A Lappish Village’, and items related to his life.

Andreas Alariesto’s paintings are visualised stories of his childhood. Some of the stories are true and some of them are not – as good stories should be. His colourful works about the lives of people communicate something genuine and original – echoes from a world that is now lost forever.
