Lake Saimaa is the third largest lake in Europe and has a total fishing area of 54,000 ha. Skilled fishers may land substantial catches in this vast area. In early spring, Lake Saimaa is an excellent place to troll for land-locked salmon and brown trout, among others. Perch may be fished by various means throughout the year, but June is usually the month for catching whoppers. Also pike may be fished throughout the year. In spring, when the water is open, by spinning, in summer by trolling and in winter by ice-fishing.
Saimaan Paula and fishing guide Teuvo Mäkinen co-operate with Lomakeskus Saimaanranta, a resort offering a multitude of activities and thus enjoyable also to those who care little for fishing. Nothing beats this destination for a combined nature holiday and fishing trip. Other sites worthy of mention are the nearby Russian border and the historical sights in the cities of Lappeenranta and Imatra, both close by.
