Following the success of his restaurants in Tampere and Turku, American Top Chef finalist Stefan Richter has opened a third restaurant, the latest located near the top of the Esplanade on Korkeavuorenkatu in Helsinki. The newest Stefan’s Steakhouse opened mid November 2012, and is already garnering rave reviews from customers.
Stefan Richter first came to attention as a contestant on the 5th series of the American Top Chef programme, where he was runner-up. Soon after, Stefan wasted no time in setting up a catering business and two restaurants stateside, before he turned his attention to Finland. Following the successful launch of his Tampere steakhouse, he opened a second in Turku, and his third in Helsinki.
As indicated by the name, steaks feature prominently on the menu. The house special is Wagyu beef fillet, Kobe-style, all the way from New Zealand. There are also three steaks to choose from that are from free-range, Clare Valley Australian Black Angus beef; beef tenderloin, rib-eye and striploin (possibly the only restaurant in Helsinki that serves striploin, at least I’ve not come across it anywhere else in the city). Of course, the menu also features Finnish beef, with tenderloin, entrecôte and the massive thousand gram porterhouse to choose from.
For those looking for something other than steak, don’t worry, there are lots of options: reindeer sirloin, fresh lobster, tuna steak, glow-fried whitefish, duck breasts, pulled pork and lamb shank. Even the selection of sauces and butters available is impressive; alongside the traditional red wine and béarnaise you’ll find the more unusual cognac and peppercorn, dark cep and truffle, or grated horseradish with egg yolk sauces.
