This Sunday Helsinki will once again host its oldest traditional event, the Baltic Herring Fair, which has been held every year since 1743. Helsinki may be celebrating 200 years as capital of Finland, but this event is celebrating 270 years! From the 7th to the 13th of October, Helsinki’s Market Square will attract fishermen from all along the southern coast of Finland, where their products will be on sale for the week. Alongside the wide variety of marinated Baltic herring (some of them very exotic indeed), visitors will also find the famous black bread of the archipelago, as well as handicrafts and even knitwear from the wool of the archipelago’s sheep!

These include a children’s show by Aarne Alligaattori & Viidakkorumpu at 11.15; the Herring food show with Sami Garam & Janne Pekkala at 12.00, 13.15 and 15.00; live music by Duo Timjan at 12.30, and by Tuomari Nurmio at 14.00; the award ceremony for the ‘Most Beautiful Fishing Boat‘ competition at 14.45; and the Herring product competition award ceremony at 16.00.
